Christmas in Majayjay

Christmas lanterns adorn the quaint town of Majayjay.

Forty minutes away from PatisTito Garden Café is the town of Majayjay in Laguna. Quaint and rich in history, Majayjay has a European feel to it with its narrow roads and Spanish architecture. Found in the town's center is the parish church of Saint Gregory the Great.

Centuries old yet still intact, it is recognized as a cultural treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. The charming Romanesque architecture is a delight to explore.

The altar of Saint Gregory the Great Parish Church is incorporated in the community Belen found across the church.

The community Belen across the church adds to the festive atmosphere.

Patis, Tito and family heard Misa de Gallo in Saint Gregory the Great Parish Church.

A pleasant surprise for them was a vendor found beside the church who served piping hot and freshly made puto bumbong wrapped in banana leaves which was quite a treat to enjoy during the Christmas season.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!

Freshly prepared puto bumbong is perfect on a cold Christmas evening in Majayay.

Cooking Filipino style on the "abuhan" in Patis' farm.

Abuhan is a traditional stove set on a wooden table stamped with soil and ashes. The palayok or kaldero is put on top and leveled on "buhay na bato" or large living stones placed at a proper height and distance where wood for fire can be easily inserted or removed.

The aroma of the smoke from certain types of wood used in the abuhan creates a rich, smokey flavor on food that the modern method cannot replicate.

Organic Roselle Tea

Organic Roselle Tea - locally grown & available at PatisTito Garden Café.

Roselle tea is great for decreasing blood pressure as it is hibiscus which has natural anti-hypertensive properties.

Recommended as an alternative to artificially made commercial "sport drinks" for active people. It has diuretic properties that helps in detoxifying while strengthening the immune system.

Philippine Cotton Revival Begins

The Department of Agriculture's Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (Phil FIDA), headed by Region I & II Director Dr. Edison Rinen, with Patis Tesoro, began the planting of cotton in Tesoro del Monte last November 24, 2014 in Tiaong, Quezon.

Patis, together with farmers of Tesoro del Monte and the staff of Phil FIDA collaborated to initiate the participatory action research on sustainability of planting indigenous and commercial cotton in this part of Southern Luzon, which aims to revive Philippine cotton in this region.

This is an exciting start for the local textile industry. Patis Tesoro has been recognized as a major proponent of the revival of pineapple fiber for piña textile which she spearheaded in the 1980's.  She has been working with FIDA since then and is excited to collaborate with them now that they have merged with the Cotton Development Authority to form Phil FIDA.

Stay tuned for updates as the research and development ensues. Meanwhile, support your local textile industry!
